Connotations of an advert

 Seven up advertisement

The advertisement I have chosen is a vintage seven up advert. It shows a baby drinking from the bottle with the Slogan 'Nothing does it better like seven up.' The advert includes denotation and connotation through images, colours, humorous and old language structure.

The image shows a baby drinking from a green bottle of seven up. The baby is in the middle of the advert, making it the focus of the product. The slogan is shown in big text to make it stand out and influence others. It mostly has the colours green white and grey. They may have used the baby because the product is so good even an infant can consume it. This encourages others to have it. There is also a hand on the bottle feeding it to the baby.

The main message is that's seven up is a popular and enjoyable drink that appeals to customers of all ages. By showing a baby drinking the seven up, it expresses the suggestive humour being shown to make a playful connection just by a drink. The unusual but silly image creates a fun child-like effect.

Overall, the seven up advert uses denotation and connotation effectively to communicate its message through humour, colour and imagery. The baby attracts attention, the green bottle creates associated freshness. The slogan also makes it memorable, meaning that it is interpreted differently and presented in such a way for modern audiences. This demonstrates how advertising uses both literal images and implied  meanings to influence how others understand such a product
